As global demand for seaweed increases, Kenya has seen an increase in farming along its coast. Farmers like these provide the raw ingredients for extracts that end up in everything from skincare products to animal feed. Mawimbi Ocean Innovations, with support from ORRAA, is working to establish a sustainable seaweed industry along the Kenyan Coast.
Vanga is the last town along the Kenyan coast before Tanzania. Historically neglected and hard to reach, the community mostly depends on fishing and mangrove wood harvesting. To prevent overexploitation, the Vanga Blue Forest Project has started a programĀ that generates carbon credits by preserving the local mangrove forests, and then invests the proceeds back into health and educational infrastructure for the town.
